Fashion is Everything
During the roaring 20's fashion began to change and women began to change their looks. But first, we should look back how women use to dress before the roaring 20's. Well we can look back when the men were at war and women stayed and began working many of these women would wear ankle skirts not showing any skin, also with the long skirts women would wear long sleeve shirts or short sleeve shirt that would go up to their elbows so they wouldn't show any of their shoulders. In addition, they would wear ankle high leather black shoes and collars that were lace to cover their necks as well hats called "cartwheel" hats because these specific hats were huge and the brim was very wide too. But then a new era began known to be a "celebration" and began on November 1918 especially in big cities after the war ended but a huge impact hit this era with the new 78th amendment called Prohibition that prohibited citizens in the United States to produce, import, transport, and sell alcoholic beverages. With this new law in place it began the created organize crime like bootleggers who would produce and sell alcoholic beverages and began the opening of speakeasies that were secret bars people would go too and clubs were you could drink. So with all these new creations cultural begin to change now life was about partying, drinking, and living life. So the women became wilder and now women were called flappers because they either smoke or drank, they also began to show more skins by wearing shorter dresses and many cut their very short but also women began to boyish "garconne" look and adoption of male clothing. But of course, the fashion during this time had to come from ideas of fashion designers. So has the ideas of fashion designers during the 1920's changed or inspired the 21st-century fashion industry.
A very big fashion designer that was known well was Coco
Chanel.Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel or also known as Coco Chanel was born August 19, 1883, in Saumur, France. Chanel saw that during World War One women's clothes were very restrictive and involved long skirts that didn't allow women to do many things. Chanel helped create women's clothing to be simpler and more practical and she also introduced trousers and suits for women and this had never been done before. The 1920's was a significant period of liberation for women but her fashion designs took a more social and political way by creating fashion designs like a suit with collarless jacket and well-fitted skirt showing that women could as well dress like men and help women say goodbye to the days of corsets and other confining garments. Another revolutionary design was Chanel's little black dress. She took the one color because it showed how chic it could be for evening wear. Also, Chanel launched her first perfume in 1920 called Chanel No.5 this first to feature a designer's name and the perfume was unseen, unforgettable, and important accessory of fashion. But overall her legacy still lived in 1969 they made a Broadway musical called Coco but even after Coco Chanel died, Karl Lagerfeld took reins at her company to continue her Chanel legacy and today her company is known worldwide and has become a great success generating hundreds of millions in sales each year.
With all these admirations by Chanel how has, it affected our society fashion today. Well with her amazing successful creation now in during the 21st century we still use some of her ideas like as trousers women still wear to feel comfortable and many stars wear these type of particular pants. Also she made costume jewellery a big trend and all of the women wear it, typical this type of jewellery is fake and not real gold or silver but she her first set of jewellery that was a take-off was fake pearls it was extravagant bling and could go with anything this idea lead other designers like Kate Spade, Juicy Couture, and Guess to make costume jewellery as well but in the color gold, silver, or rose gold. Another great inspiration that she gave to the world is the Chanel Suit this suit, in particular, was the first to borrow form menswear for women's attire and she created many iconic suits, many high brand companies also make suits like Dior, Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, and Victoria Beckham. Her Chanel No.5 perfume escalated so much that nowadays you can find many branded perfumes from companies like Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, and Gucci. Coco Chanel was incredible women who succeed so much in the fashion industry and has inspired many high brand companies to follow her path and ideas and she revolutionized women's clothes now we women are able to wear pants, suits, and short dresses and be able to comfortable and giving us women a right in the world and showing it through our clothes. And like Chanel said, " A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous."

ReplyDeleteWhy do you think women embraced this new 1920s style so quickly? What did it mean for women to dress in shorter garments or in boyish outfits? What were they trying to communicate to the world around them? Similarly, in what ways do your personal fashion choices communicate with the world?
Thank you Ms. Hatmaker for your comment. I believe that women embraced this new style because with the new idea of partying and dancing women saw that they couldn't dance in long black skirt, so that's why the creation of shorter dress that were also lose aloud the women to move easily and dance better. The new creations of fashion styles like boyish outfits gave women their place, especially in the work force that's why Coco Chanel created the Dress Suit giving women a more male look but in female clothes and that they could also dress like men. The women were showing the world around them women could dress like men and could rock that look and that they were also wild and love having fun. Well my personal fashion is usually lazy clothes or dress nicely usually the way I dress shows the world what way I'm feeling or what mood I'm in.
